Stephanie Murnane Student Teaching Internship Lesson:
Op-Art Mobile CD’s
School: Media: Contrasto / Compact Discs (Westerville City Schools) Grade Level: 8th Cooperating Teacher: Jancy Cossin Time Frame: 5 – 42 minute classes Lesson
Overview Students will be shown op-art visuals and asked to complete the first half of a worksheet detailing their opinions about what they observe. Students will then learn about Op-art and artist Bridget Riley through a PowerPoint presentation. Mobile CD’s will be created using Contrasto glued to compact discs. Students will plan their Op-art inspired design and transfer it to the CD. By cutting through the Contrasto using an Exacto knife, students will create their original Op-art designed CDs. The finished CDs will be hung from the ceiling of the room. Students will carry over the theme of Op-art into their next lesson in painting as well. Goals 1. Students will evaluate Op-art visuals without prior knowledge using a worksheet.

Students will learn about the history of Optical art and British artist
Bridget Riley.
3.
Students will design two Op-art inspired plans on a worksheet.
4.
Students will choose one design and transfer it to a Contrasto covered compact
disc.
5.
Students will safely complete a disc using an Exacto blade. Assessment/Evaluation 1. Students will be graded on their planning and critique worksheets from the first two days of the lesson.

Students will complete an assessment on Optical art and Bridget Riley at the
end of the lesson.

Contrasto CDs will be assessed using a rubric based on craftspersonship,
design, etc. (see attached rubric) Vocabulary

Optical Art - A twentieth
century art
movement and style
in which artists sought to create an impression of movement
on the picture
surface
by means of optical
illusion. It is derived from, and is also known as Optical Art.
Eliminates the figures and producing instead complex configurations of lines
and shapes

Movement - When
there is no actual motion, this refers to an implied motion -- the arrangement
of the parts of an image
to create a sense of motion by using lines,
shapes,
forms,
and textures
that cause the eye to move over the work. A principle
of design, it can be a way of combining elements
of art to produce the look of action. 3. Illusion - A deceptive or misleading image or idea. 4. Psychedelic – the name for the hallucination caused by the drug LSD. Used commonly in the 1960s. Murnane
